Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Charity

Passing on unneeded offerings could be considered slightly impolite – except if it's done in the proper manner.

A Philanthropic Auction

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell around 270 gifts given to her by international figures while abroad. This unusual assortment is said to contain gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.

These items, collectively, have an approximate value of €800,000. The plan is to put up for sale via competitive bidding by a Italian auction firm. An exact timeline has not been finalized, although the intention is to hold the auction before Christmas, with the proceeds donated to various charities.

Palazzo Chigi Holdings

The presents are said to be locked away in a repository on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. Reports indicate that Meloni is also planning to auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been gathering dust over a long period.

A complete inventory has not yet been disclosed, but some insight emerged earlier this year when a comprehensive document of all declared gifts was submitted to lawmakers. The query centered on if a statutory cap on gift value was being respected. Legally, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents worth more than €300.

An International Array of Gifts

The collection includes:

  • A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from India's prime minister.
  • A case of jewelry from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
  • A tablet from the Ukrainian president.
  • Paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • Various other items including cosmetics, a skateboard, and several rugs received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the most unusual gifts were the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.

Political Context

The prime minister has received praise, mostly from her allies, with winning over global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a key protagonist on the global scene once again.

The forthcoming sale highlights a novel approach to handle the state presents that build up during a political career.
